Dr Barnardo's Institute for Destitute Children criticism 1794 with Monument and StDr Barnardo's Institute for Destitute Children, Barkingside, London, 19th century. In 1866 Thomas John Barnardo (1845 1905), a medical missionary, opened his first institution for destitute children in Barkingside. Surrounding the home are lawns, gardens and playgrounds.
