The Order was established on 30 April 1900 by Paul Doumer
surmounted by the Prince of Wales's insignia above the Roman numeral "XII"
the reverse displays a Knights Templar insignia with the phrase “IN HOC SIGNO VINCES” (“By This Sign Thou Shalt Conquer”)
and features a smooth blunted tip as found on this pattern dagger

Instituted 2 April 1939. (1939 1945 issue). Constructed of silvered bronze with enamels, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Cross Patte with ribbed and blue enameled arms joined through the quadrants by stylized rays, the obverse overlaid by a central blue enameled medallion, situated within a circular oak leaf wreath and bearing a raised German national eagle
