but overall good structural condition

(now very soft old fold-lines suggest it was carried around in a pocket or tucked into a book or letter long ago) so the tear doesn't bother me a bit

but they definitely had some carving abilities

The pencil pulls out from the end, pencil point to the inside, and then a longer brass sleeve that it fits into, like a handle, making it much easier to write with!
